This session assists counseling professionals in overcoming ethical obstacles involving unconscious bias by increasing multi-cultural competencies and providing methods to address our own bias. There’s an ethical obligation to reduce our implicit bias, so it’s not an additional barrier to clients obtaining gainful employment or putting professional relationships at risk. This presentation will demonstrate differentiating types of bias, examples of bias, identifying ethical risks and implications, as well as tangible takeaways to put into practice.

Narcolepsy is an unrecognized, under-diagnosed neurological condition that affects all aspects of a person's life including work life, and is a recognized and protected disability under the ADA. While narcolepsy is typically treated with a combination of behavior modifications and medications, complete control of symptoms is rarely achievable. Left undiagnosed or untreated, narcolepsy can interfere greatly with daily life which can cause unique challenges for rehabilitation counselors working with narcoleptic clients. This presentation will provide background knowledge, symptomatology and manifestations, types and prevalence, potential causes, diagnostic testing and treatments, and vocational implications and success strategies for rehabilitation counselors.
